The 2027 BMW X5 is the most significant X5 since the first one rolled out of Spartanburg in 1999. This is not a facelift. It is a new generation with new design, a new interior built around BMW Panoramic iDrive, a longer wheelbase, and a 394-hp inline-six that makes the gas X5 quicker than the one it replaces. For Jacksonville drivers who have been waiting to see what comes after the current X5, the answer is finally official.

Our position after reading every page of BMW's launch documentation: the 2027 X5 40 xDrive will be the right choice for most Northeast Florida families. The 50e plug-in hybrid makes the most sense for Ponte Vedra and St. Johns buyers who can charge at home and still want a gas tank for the trip to the mountains. One honest caveat up front. As of this writing, the 2027 X5 has not reached dealer lots. Tom Bush BMW is taking orders and building allocations now, but nobody in Jacksonville has driven one on Atlantic Boulevard yet. Where we give an opinion, it is professional judgment based on BMW's specifications and more than two decades of selling X5s in this market, not a test-drive we have not done. What Makes the 2027 BMW X5 Different

Every X5 since 1999 has been built in Spartanburg, and the fifth generation keeps that tradition. For a Jacksonville buyer, that matters in a practical way. The X5 is a domestically built luxury SUV with a supply chain that runs up I-95, not across an ocean.

The design is a clear break. The vertically aligned kidney grille now carries the "Iconic Glow" illumination with double-X light signatures, the flush "BMW Winglet" door handles are standard (with optional electrically powered doors), soft-close is standard, and the roof is a standard panoramic glass panel of roughly 28 square feet. Inside, the dashboard is organized around BMW Panoramic Vision — a display band projected across the base of the windshield — paired with a 17.9-inch free-form central display and a standard 3D head-up display. The old rotary-and-screen layout is gone.

X5 40 and X5 40 xDrive

The volume models. BMW's 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid assist now makes 394 hp and 428 lb-ft, up from 375 hp in the outgoing X5 xDrive40i. Standard equipment includes 21-inch wheels with staggered tires, adaptive suspension, heated sport seats in Veganza, the panoramic glass roof, BMW Panoramic iDrive, the 3D head-up display, and Driving Assistant Plus. The rear-wheel-drive X5 40 is the value entry; in a market that sees a few weeks of standing water every summer, we expect most Jacksonville buyers to spend the $2,300 for xDrive.

X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid

The inline-six plus an electric motor produces 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of combined output, with a BMW-estimated 44 miles of electric range. That covers a typical Southside-to-downtown or Nocatee-to-Town-Center commute on electricity alone, with the gas engine standing by for the run up I-95 to Savannah or the Smokies. It is the one BMW is opening for order first, alongside the 40 xDrive.

V8 M Performance (later 2027)

Key Features and Technology

Cabin and infotainment

BMW Panoramic Vision projects driving information along the lower edge of the windshield so the driver and passenger both see it, while the 17.9-inch central display handles navigation, media, and vehicle settings. A 14.6-inch passenger screen is optional. The new multifunction steering wheel uses illuminated "shy-tech" controls that stay hidden until needed. BMW Digital Key Plus lets a phone or watch act as the key over ultra-wideband, and over-the-air updates keep the software current without a service visit.

Seating and comfort

Heated sport seats are standard, with optional multifunction seats that add ventilation and massage — a feature we recommend without hesitation for anyone who parks outdoors in July. Optional BMW Individual Merino leather comes in five colors. Climate control is 2.5-zone standard, with an optional four-zone system controlled by a rear touchscreen. The optional Bowers & Wilkins system runs 18 speakers and up to 775 watts with Dolby Atmos.

Driver assistance

Driving Assistant Plus is standard. The optional Highway Assistant allows hands-free driving at up to 85 mph on approved highways, which covers the entire I-95 and I-295 loop. Parking Assistant Plus uses AI-supported space detection.

Towing, Cargo, and Performance

Towing is where the X5 earns its place in a boating town. A 7,710-lb rating on the X5 40 xDrive covers most center-consoles and bay boats in the 22-to-25-foot range on a tandem trailer, with margin for fuel and gear. Enhanced Trailer Stability Control is built in. If you tow regularly out of Mayport or down to Palm Valley, the optional two-axle air suspension keeps the rear level under tongue weight and is the first box we would check.

Cargo is 27.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 67.7 cubic feet with them folded, per bmwusa.com. The 2.4-inch wheelbase stretch goes to the second row, which is the honest answer to the most common complaint we hear about midsize luxury SUVs from families with teenagers.

On the road, the gas X5 40 runs 0–60 in 5.1 seconds and the 50e in 4.6. Both ride on standard adaptive dampers and staggered 21-inch tires (255 front, 285 rear); 22- and 23-inch wheels are optional. The plug-in model can add Adaptive Chassis Control Professional.

Fuel Economy, Range, and Cost to Own

We are not going to guess at MPG. BMW has not released EPA ratings for the 2027 X5, and any number you see elsewhere before the EPA publishes it is an estimate. What BMW has confirmed is the electric picture: the 50e's 44-mile electric range is enough to make most Jacksonville commutes gas-free if you plug in at home overnight on a Level 2 charger, and the gas engine takes over without a stop when the battery runs down.

Florida heat is the variable to plan for. Air conditioning load reduces electric range in July and August, so treat BMW's estimates as ideal-condition numbers and plan for a margin.
