NEW TAX DEDUCTIONS FOR
BMW MODELS BUILT IN AMERICA.
THE BMW X5, X6, X7, AND XM ARE BUILT IN SOUTH CAROLINA. YOUR TAX RETURN MAY BENEFIT.
The short answer: New federal tax rules create two ways a BMW can lower your taxes. If you finance a new, U.S.-assembled BMW for personal use, you may deduct up to $10,000 a year in loan interest. If you buy a BMW SAV over 6,000 pounds GVWR for business, you may be able to write off most or all of its cost in the first year.
Updated September 2026. Talk to your tax professional about your situation.
TWO DEDUCTIONS. ONE BMW SHOWROOM.
Most BMW SAVs sold in the U.S. come from BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, BMW's largest plant worldwide. That U.S. assembly and their weight put several models in a strong position under the new rules.
For personal use
Vehicle loan interest deduction.
Up to $10,000 / year
- Applies to interest on a loan for a new vehicle with final assembly in the United States.
- Loan must originate after December 31, 2024. Tax years 2025 through 2028.
- You don't need to itemize. You'll list the vehicle's VIN on your return.
- Phases out above $100,000 modified AGI (single) or $200,000 (joint).
- Leases and used vehicles don't qualify.
For business use
Section 179 and bonus depreciation.
Up to 100% year one
- SAVs with a GVWR over 6,000 lbs are treated differently than passenger vehicles.
- Section 179 on a heavy SAV is capped at $32,000 for 2026 tax years.
- 100% bonus depreciation is back for vehicles acquired and placed in service after January 19, 2025, and can apply to the remaining cost.
- The vehicle must be used more than 50% for business and placed in service by December 31 to count for that tax year.
- U.S. assembly isn't required for this one.
WHICH BMW MODELS MAY QUALIFY.
The BMW X5 checks both boxes: it's built in Spartanburg, and recent BMW X5 trims sit above 6,000 lbs GVWR. Here's how the rest of the lineup compares.
| Model | Final assembly | Over 6,000 lbs GVWR | Loan interest deduction (personal) | Section 179 / bonus (business) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X5 | Spartanburg, SC | Yes | May qualify | May qualify |
| BMW X6 | Spartanburg, SC | Most trims | May qualify | Most trims |
| BMW X7 | Spartanburg, SC | Yes | May qualify | May qualify |
| BMW XM | Spartanburg, SC | Yes | May qualify | May qualify |
| BMW X3 | Spartanburg, SC | No | May qualify | Standard passenger-vehicle limits |
| BMW iX | Germany | Yes | No (not U.S.-assembled) | May qualify |
Quick VIN check: A VIN that starts with 1, 4, or 5 indicates U.S. assembly. BMW vehicles built in Spartanburg typically start with “5U.” The vehicle's window sticker also lists final assembly point.
HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT.
-
Pick the right BMW.
Choose a new, U.S.-assembled model for the loan interest deduction, or an SAV over 6,000 lbs GVWR for business use. The BMW X5 covers both.
-
Finance, don't lease.
The loan interest deduction only applies to a purchase loan secured by the vehicle. Our finance team can walk you through options that fit your plans.
-
Keep your paperwork.
Save your buyer's order, window sticker, and VIN. Your lender will report qualifying interest, and your tax professional will want the rest.
BMW TAX DEDUCTION FAQ.
Does the BMW X5 qualify for the new vehicle loan interest deduction?
A new BMW X5 financed after December 31, 2024 may qualify. BMW builds the X5 at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, which meets the U.S. final assembly requirement. Income limits and personal-use rules apply.
How much vehicle loan interest can I deduct?
Up to $10,000 per tax return each year from 2025 through 2028. The deduction phases out between $100,000 and $150,000 of modified AGI for single filers, and between $200,000 and $250,000 for joint filers.
Do I have to itemize to claim it?
No. You can claim the vehicle loan interest deduction whether you take the standard deduction or itemize. You'll need to report the vehicle's VIN on your return.
Can my business write off a BMW X5?
If the BMW X5 is used more than 50% for business, its GVWR over 6,000 lbs may allow a Section 179 deduction of up to $32,000 for 2026, with 100% bonus depreciation potentially covering the remaining business-use cost in the first year.
Does a lease qualify?
Lease payments don't qualify for the vehicle loan interest deduction. Business lease payments follow separate rules, so ask your tax professional which approach works better for you.
Does the BMW iX qualify?
The BMW iX is built in Germany, so it doesn't qualify for the loan interest deduction. Its GVWR is over 6,000 lbs, so it may still qualify for Section 179 and bonus depreciation when used for business.
