Maintaining Your BMW: Service Intervals and Tips

Twice-a-Year Maintenance

Every six months, it’s crucial to have your motor oil checked and changed. Your tires should also be rotated and tire alignment should be checked and corrected if necessary. Also, wax your car at least twice a year to protect and preserve its good looks.

It’s also essential to have various inspections carried out at least twice a year. This includes having a professional inspect your engine, brakes, air filters, windshield wipers, external lights, coolant, and other vital vehicle fluids. Any worn-out parts can then be replaced when necessary.

Yearly Maintenance

Every year, your engine and cabin air filters will typically need to be replaced. You should also have a full engine tune-up once a year, during which the oil filter may need to be replaced. Your engine tune-up should include a full vehicle diagnostic test.

Maintenance Every Three Years

After three years have passed, have your battery regularly tested. It’s likely to last at least three years, and perhaps up to five. The coolant also typically needs to be flushed at around this interval.

Maintenance Every Six Years

Transmission fluid may need to be replaced after about six years have passed. Spark plugs and other parts in your ignition system may also last this long. If you’ve been regularly rotating your tires and monitoring their air pressure, they’ll serve you well for up to six years. Beyond this age, it’s safest to install new tires.

Maintenance Every Nine Years

Power steering fluid tends to last longer than other fluids and may only need replacing every eight or nine years. The various belts and hoses, including the timing belt and serpentine belt, may also last this long. Despite their longevity, all belts and hoses should be checked frequently for signs of fraying or cracking.
