Your Guide to the 2021 BMW 4 Series

Overview

The first thing that will strike you about the 4 Series is its striking new grille, setting it far apart from any other BMW. However, the 4 Series is far more than just a pretty face, with improved ride comfort and responsive steering. Expect powerful acceleration and speedy gear shifts from the 8-speed automatic transmission, and a blast of power from both engine options, although M440i’s inline six-cylinder engine has the best of acceleration and happily purrs along while driving.

When it comes to the outside, the retractable hard-top convertible has been replaced by a soft top for the 2021 model year, but the coupe retains its attractive side and rear designs complementing the dramatic changes at the front end.

Performance and Fuel Economy

There are two engine options available for the 4 Series. Choosing the 430i models will net you a 2.0-liter turbo I-4 with 255hp and 294lb-ft of torque. When it comes to fuel economy, expect 25 to 34 mpg for city driving and highway driving respectively, compared to 23 and 33mpg when choosing the AWD 430i XDrive model.

With the M440i models, drivers are treated to BMW’s excellent 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6 engine, which, aside from its great acceleration when paired with the standard 8-speed transmission (which is standard across all models), also provides a punchy 382hp and 368lb-ft of torque. Fuel efficiency is exceptional here too, with 25 to 34mpg city/highway. Opting for the M440i XDrive will get you 22/32mpg.

Safety and Technology

A suite of driver-assist technologies is available as standard for the 4 Series, including lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, and blind-spot monitoring. The driver Assistance Professional optional package adds more active safety technologies such as traffic jam assist, adaptive cruise control, and side collision avoidance.

BMW’s latest infotainment system is included as standard, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included. A built-in navigation system is included, as is a 5.1-inch digital instrument cluster. These can be upgraded to either the premium or executive package which includes features such as wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a heads-up display.

Hybrid System (M440i XDrive)

Choosing the M440i XDrive variant will give you access to BMWs pioneering new mild hybrid system. The system gathers energy lost when braking and stores it in a 48-volt battery, where it is then used to power the car’s multimedia system or to provide extra power bursts, allowing the engine to work more efficiently.
