The BMW Active Protection System: Safety Features Explained
The precise features included in the Active Protection package may vary slightly depending on the model and year, and any additional optional features. However, it is typically made up of the following components:
Seatbelt Pretensioning
If the system identifies that a collision may be imminent, it automatically activates the seatbelt pretensioners. This retracts the seatbelts to remove any slack, ensuring that the driver and passengers are held firmly in position. Being held securely minimizes forward motion in the event of a collision, increasing the effectiveness of the airbags and reducing the risk of injuries.
The system looks at several indicators to determine whether a collision is about to occur. These include responding to critical driving maneuvers such as sudden lane changes, skidding, or emergency braking.
Closure of All Windows
When the system senses that a collision is about to occur, it will close any windows that are open as well as the sunroof. The goal is to strengthen the structural integrity of the car and minimize the chance of debris entering the cabin. Closing all openings also reduces the potential for the driver or passengers to be ejected.
Seat Adjustments
In some vehicles, the system will automatically adjust the front passenger seat to the optimal position. This includes moving the seat from a reclined position to upright, and moving it further away from the dashboard if it is too close. These steps should decrease the risk of injuries and increase the effectiveness of the airbags.
Post-Collision Braking
After a crash, there is a high risk of a secondary collision. To prevent this, the system will engage the brakes to bring the car to a safe and controlled stop. This is particularly beneficial if the driver is incapacitated or concussed following the initial collision.
Fatigue and Focus Alert
Most of the features in the Active Protection system come together when there are indications that a collision is about to occur. The Fatigue and Focus Alert is slightly different, aiming to warn drivers before a collision becomes inevitable.
The system monitors drivers for any signs of drowsiness or lack of attention. This includes drifting lanes, inconsistent steering maneuvers, and sudden braking. If any of these behaviors are detected, the system will provide the driver with an alert suggesting they take a break. The alert may be visual or audible, depending on the model.
